The Magic of "What If?"

"Every piece of art begins long before the first stitch."

There are moments when I think the real work of an artist has nothing to do with fabric, thread, or paint.

It begins much earlier than that.

It begins with curiosity.

With imagination.

With two simple words...

What if?

I've come to believe those two little words are where every creative journey truly begins.

The Package Hasn't Even Arrived...

This week I ordered a new set of art supplies.

They're still somewhere between the warehouse and my mailbox.

I haven't opened the package.

I haven't tested a single color.

I haven't painted one brushstroke.

And yet...

I've already created an entire piece with them.

In my imagination.

As soon as I placed the order, I could see a hummingbird hovering beside a fuchsia blossom. I imagined soft washes of Inktense flowing across the fabric, and then something magical...

The slightest shimmer catching the light across the hummingbird's wings.

Not glitter.

Not sparkle.

Just that subtle flash of iridescence you sometimes catch when a hummingbird changes direction in the sunlight.

I haven't created a single stitch yet...

But in my mind, the piece is already beginning to take shape.

Every piece of art begins with a single question: "What if?" This hummingbird lives in my imagination—for now.

Then My Brain Did What Artist Brains Do...

I smiled to myself because I had already decided these new pigments would be perfect for my hummingbird.

Problem solved.

Or so I thought.

A few minutes later another thought wandered in.

"I wonder what they'd look like on one of my sculptural vessels?"

I actually laughed out loud.

Just moments earlier I was convinced I knew exactly how I was going to use them.

Now my imagination had already wandered off in a completely different direction.

If you're an artist, you probably understand exactly what happened.

Ideas don't stand still.

One question leads to another.

One experiment opens the door to ten more possibilities.

Sometimes the best ideas aren't the ones we planned at all.

Curiosity Is Where Creativity Lives

That's one of the reasons my motto has always been...

No Rules, Just Art®

People often think it means there aren't any techniques to learn.

Of course there are.

But to me, it means something much deeper.

It means giving ourselves permission to stay curious.

To explore.

To experiment.

To wonder.

Some experiments become favorite techniques.

Others become valuable lessons.

But every single one moves us forward.

I've learned that creativity begins long before we ever pick up a paintbrush or thread a needle.

It begins the moment we're willing to ask...

"What if?"

Maybe That's True for Life Too

As I've thought about that this week, I've realized those same two words have quietly carried me through this season of my life.

What if I heal?

What if I create again?

What if this difficult chapter changes me in ways I can't yet see?

What if my next piece of artwork tells a story I couldn't have told before?

I don't always know the answers.

But I've learned there's hope in asking the question.

Because curiosity keeps us moving forward.

Whether we're trying a new art supply...

Beginning a new project...

Learning a different technique...

Or simply taking the next step in life...

Sometimes we don't need all the answers.

Sometimes we simply need the courage to ask...

What if?

My Invitation to You

This week, I hope you'll ask yourself one "What if?" question.

Not because you know where it will lead...

But because you don't.

After all, some of the most beautiful artwork I've ever created began with those two little words.

And perhaps some of life's most meaningful journeys begin there too.

So today...

I'm choosing curiosity.

I'm choosing possibility.

I'm choosing to wonder.

Because there really are...

No Rules, Just Art®

...and maybe that's true for life as well.
