Discover the Magic of Thread Painting — and Why I Love Teaching It

NO RULES, JUST ART — that’s the heart of everything I create and everything I teach.

Thread painting is one of those techniques that truly embodies that philosophy. It’s playful, expressive, a little wild, and incredibly rewarding. And I can’t wait to share it with you.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you already know that thread painting is how I bring fabric to life. It’s where quilting meets art, where color meets texture, and where your creative voice gets to shine loud and clear.

And if you’ve been curious about trying it… you’re in luck.

My Thread Painting with Embellishments workshop is happening December 2–3 at Cactus Quilt Shop — and if you’re in the Tucson area, this is your last chance this year to learn with me close to home!

Let’s talk a little about what makes thread painting so special.

What Thread Painting Really Is (and Why It Feels Like Magic)

Thread painting — or free-motion thread art — is basically drawing or painting with your sewing machine. Instead of piecing blocks or stitching traditional patterns, you’re using thread like it’s your paintbrush. You guide the fabric, choose the colors, and slowly watch an image come to life stitch by stitch.

While traditional quilting focuses on:

  • Piecing fabrics

  • Layering with batting and backing

  • Stitching to secure the quilt

…thread painting zooms in on the surface details. It’s about texture, shading, movement, expression — all created with thread.

This is where you can bring a flower petal to life, add shine to an eye, create the softness of fur, or stitch the direction of the wind. It’s intimate, expressive, and honestly… kind of addictive once you start!

Adding Dimension: Fibers, Texture, and All the Fun Good Stuff

One of my favorite parts of thread painting is pushing it beyond flat stitching. When you start adding fibers, yarns, beads, or mixed-media elements, your piece suddenly takes on a whole new personality.

Some simple ways to add dimension:

  • Mix thread weights to create contrast

  • Add fibers or yarns for a soft, organic touch

  • Incorporate beads or sequins for sparkle

  • Layer bits of fabric or appliqué for depth

  • Use batting or loft behind areas you want to “pop”

These little touches turn a stitched panel into something tactile, textural, and uniquely yours.

What We’ll Do in the December 2–3 Thread Painting Class

During this two-day workshop, I’ll walk you through:

  • Preparing your panel

  • My step-by-step thread painting process

  • How to blend colors with thread

  • How to create shading, highlights, and movement

  • Ways to add dimension with fibers and embellishments

  • And yes — you’ll leave with a finished panel, or close to it, that you’ll be proud of!

You don’t need any thread painting experience. If you can drop those feed dogs and follow your curiosity, you’ll do great. I promise.
