Creativity on a Deadline: Managing a Busy Artist Life

If you’ve ever looked at your overflowing calendar and thought, “How am I supposed to be creative with all THIS going on?”…ohhhhh, trust me — I’m right there with you!
Between teaching classes back to back, from Tucson to Sun City West, prepping for a private group workshop, creating art for galleries, and managing life’s curveballs — whew! It’s a full, beautiful, wild ride.
But here’s something I’ve learned:
“If you feel overwhelmed, you’re in good company — keep going.” 💛
Creativity doesn’t wait for silence or an empty calendar. It blooms right in the middle of the messy, busy, beautiful chaos.

Organizing Your Time with Purpose
Looking at a big project can feel like staring down a towering stack of fabric — exciting and terrifying! 😆
So I take it one tiny step at a time:
Stitch a little thread painted texture
Add just one more layer of fibers
Sketch one new idea
Pack one class bin
Small wins add up. Every stitch counts.
“You’re one small creative action away from momentum.”
And when I block time on my planner specifically for art or class prep — boom — it happens. Creativity loves an invitation!
I also schedule regular breaks. Even a 10-minute pause every hour can refresh my mind and prevent fatigue. During breaks, I step away from my workspace, stretch, or take a short walk. This simple habit keeps my energy steady throughout the day.
Avoiding Burnout by Listening to Your Energy
Some days, showing up is the victory! Let’s be real… not every day feels like magic. Some days I’m dancing with ideas. Other days I’m like, “Do I remember how to thread this machine?” 😅
That’s okay. On low-energy days, I:
Organize supplies
Find new inspiration
Play with fabric (yes, this helps 😂)
Take a walk in the Arizona sunshine
It’s still progress — and still creative.
“Progress doesn’t have to be perfect — just present.”
Variety Keeps the Joy Sparkling
One of the gifts of fiber art? There are so many ways to play. If thread painting feels heavy, I move to leather. If I’m tired of sewing, I dream up class ideas or journal designs. If the muse is hiding, I teach — because watching someone else light up often rekindles my own fire. 🔥
Teaching is my passion. Seeing those “I did that!” smiles? That’s what keeps my heart beating strong.
“We make art because it fills us up… even on the busy days.”

My Toolbox for Staying Balanced
Nothing fancy — just simple things that work:
Sticky notes everywhere
A dedicated creative corner that whispers, let’s make something!
A sketchbook in my bag for spark moments
A reminder that rest is productive, too
Oh — and caramel whiskey as a reward doesn’t hurt 🤫😉
A Gentle Reminder to You (and me)
We don’t choose this creative life because it’s easy —we choose it because it lights us up.
Some days that light is bright. Some days it flickers.
But it’s always there.
“Chaos doesn’t cancel creativity. It fuels it.”
So if you’re juggling life, deadlines, emotions, and art… I see you. I’m cheering for you.
Let’s keep showing up — heart first, thread second.
Keep creating, my friends.
NO RULES, JUST ART.
